Adding Drywall to a Garage

There are eight steps to installing drywall to the interior of a garage.

  1. Remove the existing wall covering. This allows the drywall to mounted directly to the studs and avoid problems with outlets and piping. Remove or drive flush any protruding nails to prepare a fairly smooth surface for attaching the sheets of drywall.
  2. Locate and mark the studs, vents and outlets.  Mark along the floor surface the center of each of the studs. Before covering the studs with drywall, measurement and note the locations of the vents and outlets  This allows cut outs to be made after the sheets are on the wall rather than cutting them out prior to installation.
  3. Screw in the drywall. Do not screw in too far - set the screw head just below the paper on the drywall.  Using a level, place the center stud marks on the floor onto the drywall. Screw the drywall panels into place on the studs along the edges of the panels and the stud centerlines.
  4. Cut holes for the vent and outlets.  Use the measurements from steps 2 and 3..
  5. Tape and cover the joints and holes.   Using mesh tape, cover the seams between the drywall panels.  Use an all purpose joint compound to fill in the joints and holes. Do not forget to cover the mesh tape and screw heads. A trowel is the best tool for this task.
  6. Apply the final compound coat.  Using the compound from step 5, cover the wall with a slightly thicker coat – but only enough to render joints and holes invisible.  Apply in wide stripes and smooth with a trowel.
  7. Sand and paint. Use a fine grit sand paper (120 grit or finer) to sand.  Do not press too hard. Wipe away excess dust, and then apply a coat of primer and then a coat of color.

Add metal trim. Measure and cut adhesive-backed metal trim.  Peel off the adhesive and apply, with tapered end on the floor.  Use on all walls at the floors, on the doorways, windows and corners. The trim will protect the walls from dings and dents.
