Garage doors are generally constructed of either wood or metal steel. Each has pluses and benefits.
Wood doors can be customizable for appearance and offer a variety of options with off the shelf choices. These options range from standard, raised-panel designs to elaborate and varied architectural style, including ornate Victorian, Oriental, or simulated Carriage House designs. Wood Doors are available in several different species of wood and can either be paint or stain grade.
Steel doors are more standardized and are the most common garage door. Most manufacturers offer several colors for steel doors from the factory. They can also be painted to match any color scheme. Steel doors come in three construction types:
- Single Layer Construction. This type of garage door is created from a single sheet of galvanized steel. This is the most economical garage door on the market. Except in the most temperate climate, this door may not be suitable if the garage is intended as a year-round living space as the insulation possibilities are limited.
- Dual Layer Construction. Double-layer steel doors are constructed with a galvanized steel skin as the exteriors surface, while a thick layer of either polystyrene or polyurethane is on the backside as a second layer. The back surface provides soundproofing and additional insulation for the garage interior.
- Triple Layer Construction. This type of construction has the same material as a dual layer garage door with the addition of a skin of galvanized steel for an inner layer which protects the insulation layer from damage. This added layer of steel makes triple-layer doors the strongest, most secure and most soundproof of standardized garage doors. Optionally available thicker insulation provides greater thermal resistance for harsher climates. These qork well in Denver winters.
In summary, wood garage doors are more expensive than steel doors, and wood doors permit greater flexibility when architectural and aesthetic considerations are the more important selection criteria. Steel doors provide a more cost effective solution, with standard forms that can be target for different climates and garage usage models.
